LaFace Records was formed in 1989 as a joint company with Antonio 'L.A' Reid and Kenneth 'Babyface' Edmonds and Arista Records. The nicknames of the duo's production company was their inspiration for the combined name 'LaFace'. LaFace went on to become a successful label throughout the 90's and was responsible for producing famous artists such as; OutKast, P!nk, Usher, Cee-Lo and more. Towards the end of the decade LaFace produced fewer artists and Babyface begun to focus more on his own music career. In 1999 the label was acquired completely by Arista and BMG and in 2001 L.A Reid was appointed CEO of Arista. As a result of this LaFace was dissolved as most of its prominent artists moved to the main label Arista to work under Reid.
In 2004 after the reconstruction of BMG labels, LaFace was reactivated as one quarter of the newly reconstructed Zomba Music Group. Most of LaFace's former artists who moved onto Arista returned to LaFace upon its reactivation.
